Bored to Tears

So, two days ago somebody wrote a threatening note on the wall in the boys locker room that said something to the effect of: "I'm going to kill everyone on 4/30/09." I've heard it refered to as the "murderous threat" "death threat" "low-level-threat" and "prank." The principal sent an email out to the staff yesterday and told us that it had been investigated and not to worry. He didn't give any details. Needless to say, rumors were flying around the building among both students and staff, and the kids started filling in the blanks and making up the details that were missing. We had a staff meeting after school and were told to proceed "business as usual." So here I am, sitting at my desk, bored to tears. Only half the students showed up, and it's pretty hard to proceed "business as usual" with just four kids. Instead, they've been drawing on the chalkboard and teaching me some Chinese characters. I now know how to write 1, 2, and 3. What a day.

New to Blogger? Why yes she is.

I'm pretty sure I've convinced my friend L to start a blog of her own... being that she's an avid reader of mine, I figured it was only fair for her to provide some reading entertainment for me!

(You know, I purposely posted this so that you'd have no excuse for backing out)

Hehe... I can't believe I used the word "avid" -- as if I blog enough to provide enough material for an "avid" reader. LOL.

Confession Time

I read my own blog. Repeatedly.

Maybe if enough other people started their own blogs, I would have something to occupy myself with!

Talk about slow

First, let me say that I love IKEA. Second, let me say that that place can suck the life out of you. B and I went on Saturday to get ideas. We debated black versus birch; the Aspvik versus the Effectiv; futons versus sofa beds. Finally, over three hours later, with our list in hand, aisles and bins marked, we wound our way toward the warehouse. That's when they made their announcement that the store would be closing in 15 minutes. Yeah, we were there so long we ran out of time. We had to go back on Sunday to actually make our purchases. So, does that make me lucky? You know, I did have the pleasure of getting a $1 frozen yogurt twice in the same weekend.

Indian/Not Indian

I was in DC yesterday (teacher field trip -- no kids -- yay!) so I divided my time between the National Gallery of Art and the American Indian Museum. Surprisingly, my favorite exhibit was at the American Indian Musuem. A painter name Fritz Scholder used bold colors and images to poke fun at and defy Indian stereotypes. One of the most obvious examples of this was an "old western" looking painting of a rider on horseback. It was painted in bright pink and purple, colors that are about as far from "old western" as possible. You can check out his online gallery at http://www.nmai.si.edu/exhibitions/scholder/

Fools and Slaves

So I recently finished reading A Long Fatal Love Chase by Louisa May Alcott (great book by the way... nothing like Little Women) and I got some food for thought from two of the main, male characters:

Tempest: "I was thinking what a curious thing love is; only a sentiment and yet it has power to make fools of men and slaves of women."

Ignatious: "The more I love her the worthier of her I will endeavor to become by my own integrity of soul."

You can see from my choice of quotes that I’m all sentimental, but I'm curious--do either of these resonate with you?

I'm Back!

Hubby and I spent Spring Break in Europe... three days in London and then three more in Dublin. WE LOVED IT :) I think my favorite things were the British Museum, touring the Tower of London, and meeting my Irish cousins. Enjoy some pics!

1. The British Museum - It houses the Rosetta Stone and tons of ancient Egyptian artifacts.

4. Our Irish cousins: Thomas and Sarita. They treated us to our 1st Irish dinner!

5. We visisted the Guiness Brewery... too bad for B that I didn't want all of my pint.
