Indian/Not Indian

I was in DC yesterday (teacher field trip -- no kids -- yay!) so I divided my time between the National Gallery of Art and the American Indian Museum. Surprisingly, my favorite exhibit was at the American Indian Musuem. A painter name Fritz Scholder used bold colors and images to poke fun at and defy Indian stereotypes. One of the most obvious examples of this was an "old western" looking painting of a rider on horseback. It was painted in bright pink and purple, colors that are about as far from "old western" as possible. You can check out his online gallery at

(Here's another one that I enjoyed, called Four Indian Riders)
